[discography, lyrics, and translations here]
For those of you who are into darkwave romantic songs, Illuminate is a perfect fit for you. Johannes Berthold is the mastermind behind this band, taking charge of music, text, and production. As if that was not enough, Berthold is the main singer; offering his clear, natural voice, a more menacing low glutteral voice - but never a screaming one. I would dare say that he's one my favourite vocalists as well. Many of the band's songs are duets with a female operatic style vocalist (They seem to come and go frequently. The duets embody what is Illuminate, as it wouldn't the same without them. The current female vocal, from Augenblicke to present, is Conny Schindler). Illuminate's Music usually consists of a beat, sometimes backing guitars (never solo moments), sometimes light elctronics, plenty of drawn out synth strings - but the one instrument that stands out and represents the band, is the piano, played by Berthold. On guitar is Jrn Langenfeld, and on keyboard is Johannes Knees.

From Germany, Illuminate has a large cult follwing in Europe and Latin America, though the band is virutally unknown in USA. All CDs are obtained through German imports. Berthold founded the band ten years ago in 1993 with their demo album "Posie" that featured their dark style piano and synth with his crafted lyrics. The band consisted of Berthold, female vocalist Anja Krone, and Christian Olbert for performance. I havne't seen any videos of this Illuminate, but I'd imagine it be quite gothic, if there's a performance member as part of the band.

I recall that when I first saw Illuminate CD covers, I expected the songs to be about vampires and other so called "gothic" (in quotes) themes. The covers were paintings of a pale skinned man offering a rose to a pale skinned woman set against a castle, graveyard, or other similar scenes. While "vampires" do appear in a few songs, to my pleasant suprise, their lyrics were not at all morbid. Actually, "Vampire" is mentioned one or twice, but only as a metaphor, such as in "Der Vampir des eigenen Herzens" {Vampire of Your Own Heart}. Song topics for the most part are love, warmth, coldness, feelings, exploration, and other real emotions. I cannot read nor speak German, but I've read translated reviews online that the lyrics are written in an older, fairly poetic classic style German - different from modern spoken German, void of any popular phrases imported from USA. I can at least say I like the English translations of them!

Their first album Verfall, released in 1996, contained "Leidenschaft" {Passion}, which is often included in v.a. compilations. (I especially like the new version from the Weiss album.) A year later, came Erinnerungen, and in 1998 came Erwachen, from which I admit my liking especially to "Geheimes Leben" {Secret Life}, and "Der Traum des Tnzers" {Dream of the Dancers}, which his glutteral voice is used. These three albums formed a trilogy of sorts. In 1998, Illuminate released "Nur fr dich" {Only for you}, and it became their strongest hit ever. Following that major milestone, Illuminate followed up and released strong albums Ein Neur Tag in 2000 and Kaltes Licht in 2001, with "Leuchtfeuer" {Beacon}, "Zweiter Weg" {Second Way}. Augenblicke, released in 2004, seems to be getting mixed reviews from what I read. I haven't heard it yet, but perhaps the negative reviews stems from the fact that Illuminate is now on Nuclear Blast, a primarily metal label. Therefore, perhaps metalheads are reviewing the album?

Lucky for many of you, you can just get the compilation albums, 10x10 Schwarz and 10x10 Weiss! They were released in 2003. The Schwarz album contains darker (seems lighter to me) songs with more guitar and electronics while the Weiss album contains lighter songs, more keyboards, synths and guitars. Both splendid albums contain redone (improved) versions of their old songs as well as each having a new song. My favorites are "Nur fr dich", "Zweiter Weg", "Horizont", "Leidenschaft", "Geheimes Leben", and these are better than the original versions.

Please enjoy reading the English lyrics I typed up from the 10x10 albums. I could not find them anywhere on the net. For the other songs, the online translated versions are provided. Surprisingly, they seem to make sense!

One more thing, the band is pronounced "IL-LU-MI-NA-TE" with the final "TE" spoken at the end!
